shuffle down the street and coming in to focus when
a shot rang out in the dark.
thoughts escaped in the flash of waking's daze
and i looked up with a cold start.
i said to this girl what you doin out here
way out and alone beside the park.
she spoke i was looking for a spark to me
and maybe a little something to smoke.
i said i've got a little something to toke
but maybe you and me can take a walk.
i got a pill that'll make you sleep and dream
but its far too cold for standing still.
come with me and we'll drag our feet
til we forget where we are,
let's watch our words turn to steam
and roll our eyes at the stars.
she said i don't know, but i need to go
back home where my dreams dont grow.
where things are exact and not quite what i need,
but i know that the shadows dont breathe.
i said that's alright, walked further into night,
and laughed at sirens passing me.
it wouldn't be the last time into the park
to kick stones up High River trail.
it wouldn't be the last time i saw her twist in the wind
on her way out to sea with no sails.
the city is only so big,
a junction yard with but so many rails,
we've only got so much work to do
and but only so many lunch pails.
