Dandelion Castle (bed time story to my little sister)

(fourteen text messages because I couldn't give her a hug and kiss goodnight from 300 miles away.  she asked me if i wouldn't mind telling her a bedtime story, so I did.)

Once upon a time there was a king who lived in a castle made of giant dandelions.

He wasn't the greatest king ever but he was pretty good and everyone in the castle loved to bake muffins with dandelion milk and sesame seeds to sell to other kingdoms and make dandelion beer to store up for the fall and winter

Every year there was a huge festival at the end of summer when all the brilliant yellow steeples and spires folded themselves up then popped open into giant balls of fuzzy white.

People came from all of the other kingdoms to see the entire castle turn yellow to white over that week. By festivals end though the winds would change and the banners would begin to march away, each nation playing their own anthem as they left and all around them the air blazing and glittering with drifting fur of all sizes, summer snow.

Children would put the small ones in their hair and women held the big ones like sun umbrellas. Horses chewed on their stems and laughed and bugled watching them swirl.

Winter was coming soon and the other kingdoms knew, but loved the festival and muffins and coveted the aged beers in the winter.  So as they left, each kingdom paid tribute to dandelion castle with their finest foods and the stores would build up so great that the people of dandelion castle would not go hungry.

They lined the lane as each kingdom passed, ivy castle, honey suckle castle, even potato castle, and marigold keep.  And as the last trumpet faded and lanterns began to light before the fading sun, the king watched his people return to their homes, arm in arm, faces drawn and sullen, but strong.  There would be work to do yet and food to store away, but that could wait for tomorrow.  They knew winter was coming and the green walls of dandelion castle would soon turn brown.  They went to their homes and they smiled with their heads on their beds and yawns rising up in the air.  The king smiled too and all the people across all the  lands slept well because they knew dandelion castle loved them and needed their love to see winter through.

The end :D Gnite ;-)
